ABOUT US

Twisted Stocking has been committed to delivering interactive visual arts to all areas of the community in Haringey and Tottenham for nearly 20 years. We've been funded by Heritage Lottery, Tottenham Grammar School Foundation, Metropolitan Gardens Association and Local council on several occasions for community projects.

Proudly, our projects involve the production of original Theatre and Arts events in unusual settings, such as Museums and listed Buildings.

The site specific work produced has called for historical research in our nearest archives at Bruce Castle Museum, this in turn has triggered strong collaborations with Bruce Castle and the borough's heroes, heroines and heritage.

Original murals, sculptural weaving and the installation of earth & willow-works, have been employed to create innovative "Green Outdoor Classrooms". These bespoke teaching spaces are inspired by local history and traditional crafts usually informed by the national curriculum. This results in a learning legacy created by and for its young users.

Our Story

The artistic director of Twisted Stocking is Angela Baker. She researches, designs and co-ordinates the team of artists relevant to each project. The main thrust to the company ethos is to marry a diversity of styles, then explore a selection of choice materials to develop the event/celebration/festival. For more permanent planted installations that are site specific the process is much deeper and maybe historically rooted; detailed research, locally sourced materials and plants are essential.

Angela completed an RHS Horticultural course at Capel Manor in Garden Practice & Design Principles, specifically with special needs children and inclusive gardens in mind. Since that training in 2007, Twisted Stocking has successfully re-designed the whole interior of the nursery at Gallions School in Becton, using a myriad of materials to assemble different compartmental environments reversing the outdoors into the indoors e.g. (Wet Science Room, a snow-capped Wardrobe, an Autumnal Reading Tent, a Jungle Lily-pad Library & an Aerial Atrium with worm hole, owls and sparrows!) This interactive environment encourages the under 5's to use their own learning style to respond.

Meanwhile the company was developing again, designing big willow installations, e.g. living willow palaces, green villages and long tunneled igloos. A lot of these "happenings" and festival sculptures were jointly developed with Georgia Wisbey.
